Everest Base Camp 2018 Day 8 Part 2: Gorakshep to EBC

Sunday, 18 November 2018

Elevation: Gorakshep (5164m) to Everest Base Camp (5380m)
Estimated Distance & Time: 5km / About 2 to 3 hrs

Trekking Route map to Mt. Everest Base Camp --> Route map

After a short break in Gorakshep, we began our final push to base camp with our porter, Santosh. Lagipun estimated time nak sampai ke base camp about 2-3hrs & the return is the same. Aku, Uncle & santosh mula bergerak from Gorakshep around 1pm. Bestnya lah trekking tanpa backpack. Tapi for today only to EBC since Santosh tak bawa apa-apa pun nak ke EBC. Rilex je dia.

Gorakshep at 5,164m altitude

Trek at the very beginning to EBC from Gorakshep is relatively flat & leisure. Boleh dikatakan trek sepanjang menuju EBC agak berbatu, so, kena watch your step juga.

Akan jumpa this signboard otw to EBC. Signboard ni lagi tinggi dari EBC kot.

Alhamdulillah, we arrived at Everest Base Camp at 2.38pm waktu Nepal. So, basically we made it less than 2 hours to reach base camp. It was around -9degC juga at that time masa kami sampai kat EBC. Memang seriuosly sejuk sangat masa tu tapi aku gagahi juga. I have reached this far why I should quit. Sebenarnya, EBC ni normally meriah between March to May saja sebab masa tu ada expedisi to Everest and most of the participant & crew members akan berkampung hampir 3 bulan juga kat sini. So, sapa yang ke EBC during this 3 months mungkin boleh nampak juga lah kemeriahan di sini. Tapi sebab masa kami sampai ni November & no expedition, so, the base camp, just that's it.

So, nak kena take turn juga bergambar kat atas bersama EBC signboard with background view of Nuptse & Lhotse. Ohh, walaupun kita dah sampai Everest Base Camp tapi dari sini memang tak akan nampak Mt. Everest sebab blocked by Mt Nuptse.

We spent about 45minutes juga kat Base Camp ni. Tak boleh nak lama sangat sebab dah hampir pukul 4pm & we need to get back to Gorakshep before dark. Rasa macam tak cukup saja masa sebab tak puas lagi rasanya. Kalau ikutkan, every angle kat EBC ni, aku nak ambil gambar & video tapi itulah dalam keadaan cuaca & altitude sekarang ni, pergerakan kami agak terbatas. Nak control breathing & tahan sejuk lagi.

By the time kami mula bergerak balik ke Gorakshep pun masih tak nampak kelibat Fad & Deepak, aku rasa, diorang mesti still on the way. Masa kami nak mula gerak balik tu juga, salah sorang daripada group Malaysia yang selalu saing bersama kami tu pun sampai. 2 orang lagi aku jumpa masa on the way balik. Selebihnya, aku tak nampak pulak, so, I guest they didn't make it to the EBC. Fad aku tak jumpa masa on the way balik tapi terserempak masa dah hampir sampai di Gorakshep. Actually, Fad dah hampir sampai pun di EBC, about 1 hour lagi tapi sebab perut dia still sakit (aku rasa dah berlanjutan beberapa hari juga & agak kritikal), so, dia give-up halfway selepas Deepak cakap tak ada apa sangat pun kat EBC tu.

From Everest Base camp ni pun boleh lihat Khumbu Icefall. The Khumbu Ice fall is located just above Base Camp at approximately 18,000ft on the south side of Mount Everest. The ice fall is regarded as one of the most dangerous stages of the South Col route that takes climbers to the summit of Mount Everest. (Source: wikipedia )

Finally, we arrived again at Gorakshep for overnight

We made it to the Gorakshep about 2hrs from EBC. Timing lebih kurang sama je masa nak pergi.

Lodging here in Gorakshep is basic. Don’t expect too much. Due to peak season on November, rooms here are limited. So, kami terpaksa share room dengan Uncle. The room was just nice for the 3 of us. Not too small & still got space to move around & to put our belongings.

Nights are cold in the rooms but that should be expected at this altitude (and for most of the trek). And don’t be surprised if the water is frozen in the toilet either. Walaupun, kami tak mandi tapi cabaran paling getir bagi aku adalah ketika nak berwudhu walaupun aku hanya menggunakan spray bottle saja. Mana sanggup nak nak kena air masa tu dengan suhu sekitar -16 degC. Air kat toilet pun dah beku. Bismillahhirrahmanirrahim.

3G was available if you have an NCell simcard or hotspot. Of course, it is nice to avoid wifi and social media but it is a nice way to check-in upon reaching your goal of Everest Base Camp, hahaha. Tapi, aku tak sempat nak buka phone once return from EBC pun. The next day baru tengok itupun tak mampu nak update apa-apa. After simple dinner that night, aku terus pulang ke bilik & tidur. Sakit kepala aku tiba-tiba datang semula. Aku aware yang Actifast tu hanya berkesan untuk sementara waktu saja, so, bila dah habis tempoh tertentu, sakit tu akan datang balik. Aku tak ambil any medication pun malam tu, rasa nak terus tidur saja.

Actually this is not dinner tapi Deepak prepared once kami reach Gorakshep, Hot plain water & garlic soup. Katanya sangat elok kalau makan sup ni wit the hot water once returned from EBC.

Malam tu sebelum dinner, uncle kasi cadangan yang kami tak perlu panjat Kala Patthar the next morning bila tengok kondisi kami yang tak berapa nak ok. Kalau nak panjat Kala Patthar, kena start awal pagi sebab nak catch the sunrise. Tapi boleh saja nak lewat sikit tapi kena manage time betul-betul lah sebab nak kena make sure sempat sampai ke Periche on the same day. Pada mulanya, aku nak kasi cadangan nak tunggu esok dulu tengok macam mana, if sakit kepala dah ok, baru proceed to Kala Patthar tapi bila tengok kondisi Fad & Uncle yang nampak macam tak berapa sihat, so, aku pun terus setuju dengan semua. Finally, kami dah capai kata sepakat tak nak panjat Kala Patthar. I knew this is the mild AMS. And the only way to reduce the pain is to descend to a lower altitude. Harap-harap semua akan ok & back to normal esok.

Sleeping at this altitude is difficult and I can say from experience that it was not a pleasant one. But, that night in Gorakshep, maybe because of the cold temperature, aku tidur lebih lama daripada biasa. Ingat lagi Uncle tanya kami the next day, tahan korang ni tidur tak pakai sleeping bag. Jawapan aku, tak boleh nak fikir dah uncle, hahaha. Anyway, that is all part of the adventure and makes the arrival at EBC worth the effort.

Today was the most difficult day of the trek for me. I never felt this headache before until I reach Gorakshep. Ohh, macam ni rupanya rasa mild AMS. However, seeing EBC with my own eyes even though it wasn’t as I expected is something I will never forget and would recommend anyone looking for the trip of a lifetime. You should try if you love adventure & ada extra budget (ini haruslah).

Alhamdulillah, Everest Base Camp checked.

Everest Base Camp 2018 Day 8 Part 1: Lobuche to Gorakshep

Sunday, 18 November 2018

Elevation: Lobuche (4910m) to Gorakshep (5164m)
Estimated Distance & Time: 4.5km / About 4 to 5 hrs

Trekking Route map to Mt. Everest Base Camp --> Route map

Today is the day...

After 7 days of continuous trekking, finally, the day has come. Alhamdulillah, we still survived at this stage despite the extreme temperature until today for the final battle to Everest Base Camp.

Malam tadi before tidur, aku bagi tahu Uncle yang aku nak ambil Diamox tapi dia macam tak galakkan sebab dah sampai ketinggian 5000m. Sebab dia cakap kalau nak makan, masa kat Namche lagi dah start makan. Emmhhh, aku aware juga yang cara penggunaan Diamox ni, memang selalunya kena ambil sebelum kena symtom AMS tapi kalau dah ada symtom AMS memang tak jalan dah. Bila Uncle cakap takut ada side effect kalau aku makan malam tadi & aku pulak memang tak pernah makan Diamox, so, the best option, aku decide tak nak makan. Actually, I was still ok last night, cuma, aku risau untuk perjalanan hari ini nak ke EBC sebab kami akan hike more than 5000m and this is my first time hiking more than 5000m walaupun aku dah pernah sampai lebih tinggi dari EBC masa lalu kat Khardung La tapi dengan naik kereta lah, hahaha.

Beautiful Morning at Lobuche

My O2 Level that morning

Some useful information available at our Guesthouse

Simple Breakfast that morning

Perjalanan kami bermula seawal 7.10am from Lobuche to EBC. Suhu sekitar -10degC that morning in Lobuche. Sejuk gila. Tak ada pulak tanda snow nak turun. Cabaran kalau start trekking awal pagi ni adalah suhu sejuk. Normally kami start around 8am, so, matahari dah naik tinggi juga. Tapi kali ni kami start awal, keras jugalah nak tahan sejuk melampau untuk the first 1 hour trekking. Risau juga masa tu kalau sejuk macam ni berterusan, I have to do something. Maybe sebab aku pakai stokin normal & wool tu yang tak mampu nak menahan sejuk, tak sure pulak. Tapi selama aku trekking sampai hari ke-7, pakai 1 stokin pun masih mampu menahan sejuk masa trekking tapi hari ni, entah kenapa sejuk dia lain macam sangat. Luckily, uncle sedapkan hati aku cakap, sabar tunggu matahari naik sikit, ok dah nanti tu. Alhamdulillah, after about 1 hour trekking, barulah terkena pancaran cahaya matahri & sejuk yang melanda tadi slowly hilang.

My attire for today's journey to EBC, Thermal Wear - Heatech - Base Layer - Windbreaker. Extra layer for today's journey. Tapi, untuk permulaan trekking, aku pakai light down juga, cuma bila dah start panas tu, baru buka. Aku memang sentiasa standby, down jacket dalam backpack (sebab ringan & lebih tahan sejuk). Attire nak trekking during winter pun depends on individuals, let say, kalau kau jenis tahan sejuk & dah biasa dengan cuaca sejuk maybe tak perlu pakai tebal sangat pun.

Let's begin the journey

Subhanallah

Sometimes, I just need a break, to a place I love, to get away from everything

Difficult roads often lead to beautiful destinations

Route to Gorakshep

Steep Incline to Gorakshep

Trek relatively flat for the first 2 hours until the gently steep incline to Gorakshep. Then, another 2-3hrs more trekking to reach Gorakshep. Kalau ikutkan distance to Gorakshep from Lobuche hanya 4.5km tapi sebab kita dah semakin tinggi (more than 5000m altitude), udara semakin tipis dengan suhu dibawah paras beku, agak menyukarkan perjalanan. It did happened to anyone during this stage. So, don't panic, walk slowly, keep hydrated & enjoy the beautiful view along the trek to EBC. Trust me, rugi kalau tak enjoy the moment sebab cantik sangat.

Tapi sebab tahu Fad memang sentiasa bersama Deepak, so, aku follow Uncle dihadapan. At least, setiap seorang ada peneman. Uncle pulak aku nampak dah semakin teruk pulak sakit dia bila dah sampai kat altitude sekarang ni. Ubat yang dia makan setiap hari pun nampak macam tak jalan saja. Sepanjang perjalanan nak sampai ke EBC Uncle non-stop batuk & selsema. Ada masanya aku nampak Uncle sempat tidur bila kami berhenti sebentar nak berehat. Aku tahu Uncle tak berapa sihat tapi masih gagah nak teruskan misi. Apa taknya, non-stop trip kot sebelum trip EBC. Kagum pulak aku sebab walaupun dah berusia 56thn dan dalam keadaan sedemikian rupa pun, Uncle masih kuat & hebat.

The beautiful view & the route that we had just passed

Route to Gorakshep

Panaromic View otw to Gorakshep

The best view comes after the hardest climb

After about 4hrs trekking from Lobuche, we will come across Gorakshep, a small Himalayan village found on the journey to EBC. This is the last resting spot for most trekkers on their trip before making the final trek to Everest Base Camp.

Most journeys will pass through Lukla to Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Deboche, Pangboche, Dingboche, Lobuche and finally Gorakshep. Most trekkers stay overnight at Gorakshep, as trekking permits will not allow to camp at EBC.

Gorak Shep was the original base camp for climbers in the 1950s before moving closer to the base of the mountain, just below the infamous Khumbu Ice Fall. It is located at 5,164m (16,942 ft.)

Gorak Shep means "dead ravens," because of the complete lack of any kind of vegetation in this place.

Gorak Shep is also the starting path for the ascent of Kala Patthar which is 5,550m (18,209 ft.). Kala Patthar climbs start very early in the morning, normally around 3.30am to 4am. The goal is the reach the top by sunrise for an incredible view of Mt. Everest and the sun coming over behind it. This is an optional climb for all trekkers but it will take you to your highest point on the trek and the views are spectacular. For many trekkers, summitting Kala Patthar, provides both the best views of Everest and surrounding mountain.

(Source: wikipedia)

Finally, we arrived at Gorakshep after about 4.5hrs journey

Aku & Uncle sampai di Gorakshep around 11.30am. About 4.5hrs trekking juga. Sampai di Gorakshep, aku tiba-tiba diserang sakit kepala & loya. Masa tu, chinese guy from Malaysia yang aku selalu nampak masa trekking panggil aku duduk depan dia sebab kebetulan masa kami sampai tempat agak full. Lupa sungguh nak tanya nama dia. So, aku tanpa berlengah terus tidur depan dia tengah makan. Selera sungguh dia ni makan, laju pulak tu. Bila dia nampak aku yang tengah weng-weng macam tu, terus dia bangun & ambil ubat kasi kat aku... Vitamin C & Paracetamol (nak gelak pun ada masa tu tapi aku makan jugalah). Dia suruh aku rest dulu sebelum pi EBC. Lepas saja dia habis makan, guide dia dah kasi hint nak bergerak ke EBC dah.

Since Deepak masih tak sampai lagi, so, Santosh (our porter) yang entertain kami dulu kat Guesthouse di Gorakshep. Aku hanya minta Honey Ginger Lemon & Garlic Soup saja untuk lunch tapi itupun aku tak mampu habiskan sebab tiba-tiba semua tak boleh nak masuk dah. Last-last uncle suruh aku minum Coke yang belum buka lagi separuh botol sebab dia cakap barangkali angin je tu. So, aku pun follow lah. Tak sampai 5min, terus cari toilet & muntah. Tiba-tiba terus rasa lega sikit. While waiting for Fad & Deepak, aku tidur dulu kat dalam bilik sementara redakan sakit kepala ni.

Alhamdulillah, I've made it to this level

After 30mins macam tu, Fad & Deepak pun sampai. Aku dengar Deepak macam dah kasi arahan suruh aku & Uncle bergerak dulu bersama Santosh sebab waktu tu dah hampir pukul 1pm. Deepak & Fad akan menyusul kemudian. Nasib baik bangun je dari tidur dah kurang rasa sakit kepala tu. Tapi aku makan juga 2 biji Actifast sebelum start perjalanan ke EBC, risau sebarang kemungkinan sakit lagi, so, kita standby dulu. Rasa bersalah pulak ambil Uncle punye last stok Actifast sebab cari yang aku punya tak jumpa. So, untuk summit attack ni, tak perlu bawa barang banyak sangat, cukup sekadar air, energy food & medicine. Lagi ringan lagi bagus sebab boleh mempercepatkan pergerakan walaupun in reality it was really hard to walk fast at this altitude.

Everest Base Camp 2018 Day 7: Dingboche to Lobuche

Saturday, 17 November 2018

Elevation: Dingboche (4345m) to Lobuche (4910m)
Estimated Distance & Time: 11km / About 6 to 7 hrs

Trekking Route map to Mt. Everest Base Camp --> Route map

Two days away.

We are 2 days away from EBC. After 6 days of continuous hiking, we are barely 48 hours away from our target destination. It was very cold that morning and waking up was not easy. Honestly, rasa nak sambung tidur je balik but no, the trek has to be covered and the destination has to be reached.

Today will be a very tough day for all of us because we will climb more than 500m to reach Lobuche (4910m). And we almost at 5000m altitude.

Today’s route, we will head back up to the same ridge we climbed on yesterday but we will taking it further. We will walk past many peaks to our left, including the spectacular Taboche Peak (6495m), Cholatse (6335m) and many beautiful valleys.

Beautiful Morning from The Good Luck Hotel

That morning at Good Luck Hotel, Dingboche

Breakfast Day 7

Kami mula bergerak ke Lobuche after breakfast around 7.30 a.m. Kami antara group terawal juga yang memulakan perjalanan nak ke Lobuche tapi macam biasalah, on the way pasti kami akan dipintas oleh Mat Salleh. Lagipun berbeza kalau tengok Mat Salleh dengan Malaysian ni trekking. Mat Salleh ni kalau stop & ambil gambar, sekejap je. Tapi kalau orang kita ni, kalau stop & ambil gambar, selagi tak cantik angle tu selagi tu lah tak bergerak, hahaha. At least, slow walk pun dah cukup nak maintain body temp.

The route to Thukla & Lobuche

The first part of the trek was relatively on flat land heading towards Lobuche. For the first 2 hours, we will only be walking towards an unseen turn. However, the land is vast and you will be amazed by the scenery that surrounds you. Beauty beyond description.

Arrived at Thukla for Lunch break

After about 3 to 4 hours (depend on your pace), kita akan tiba di Thukla, a small town before the steep incline towards Lobuche. We stopped for a while at Thukla for a quick lunch. So, macam susah juga nak dapat space for rest. For lunch, kami still order Nasi Putih 2 sebab kami akan makan Bersama lauk from Malaysia & 1 Noodle Soup (syarat nak buat kuah saja). Selera aku masih macam biasa cuma Fad sajalah tak berapa nak lalu makan. Makan juga tapi tak banyak. Masa sampai tadi dia dah muntah dulu. Tapi, kalau let say tak lalu makan heavy meals, boleh je ganti dengan snacks yang korang bawa, at least, you have something to eat for energy.

We will stop at Kalapathar Lodge at Thukla for lunch & short rest

Lunch

Leaving Tukhla for Lobuche

After lunch, we will continue our journey to the final destination for today, Lobuche. Another about 3 hours journey (my pace). The next part of the route takes us up a steep incline to Chukpo Lari, but on the way trekking, try to make sure you look back and admire the views from all angles.

The trail to Lobuche

We will be facing a steep incline right after Thukla which will take about an hour to climb before reaching Lobuche Memorials or Chukpo Lari, a place dedicated for the brave warriors who have fallen during their attempt to ascent Mount Everest. The memorial is surrounded by mountains and are chosen by the locals for the fallen ones, a place where they love which is the mountains. We stopped for a while here and continued our way across towards Lobuche.

As we walk headed for Lobuche, the beautiful view comes into picture

Arrived at Lobuche Memorials

Every sunset brings the promise of a new dawn

The final resting place for the brave souls who attempts Mount Everest

Lobuche is about 2 hours of hike away from Lobuche Memorial park and we will be crossing a very rocky path. There will be minimal elevation gain up until Lobuche. Not to focus on the ‘final’ destination, but rather to take full advantage of the jaw-dropping views that our trek offers.

Beautiful mountain ranges surround your journey towards Lobuche

Arrived at Lobuche

We reached Lobuche at around 4.30pm. We stayed at Mother Earth Hotel.

Santosh our porter dah tunggu kat depan Hotel nak pass the room key. Sampai-sampai je, aku terus ke bilik sebab kat dining hall ramai sangat orang. So, while waiting for Fad, aku sempat tidur dulu kat bilik. Biasalah bila dah sampai tempat tinggi ni, oxygen akan berkurangan & we tend to feel sleepy. Sejuk yang amat tapi bertabah lah because we still have one more day to our final destination tomorrow.

Fad & Deepak sampai di Guesthouse 30min later. Condition Fad masa tu agak kritikal juga sebab sakit perut & loya. Masa dinner pun, Fad tak lalu makan dah. Nak paksa pun dah tak boleh sebab dia cakap memang tak boleh masuk. Masa tu, aku dah fikir yang Fad is slowly getting the mild AMS eventhough dia tak rasa sakit kepala.

AMS symptom ni bukan setakat sakit kepala saja tapi pening (dizziness), tak lalu makan, loya (nausea), sakit otot (muscle aches), susah nak bernafas pun antara symptom AMS. So, kalau dah ada symptom yang lain tu selain sakit kepala, please let your guide know about this, jangan diam & assume ok je semata-mata nak sampai ke EBC walaupun pada hakikatnya your body is suffering.

We ended our day with dinner and an early rest because we will start very early from Lobuche to Gorakshep at 7.00am. Tomorrow will be the day. Finally, we will reach Everest Base Camp. InsyaAllah.
